We had very wet but very fun Memorial Day weekend. On Saturday, after the girls ran with Dad, we took the kids swimming and stayed until it started to rain.
On Sunday, we went to church in the rain, then came home in the rain. We watched “We Are Marshall” with the kids to show them what it means to never give up. After I dried my tears and re-applied my makeup (I forgot how good that movie is!), we headed over to Grandma and Grandpa’s house for family dinner. In an incredible lack of planning ahead on my part, I wore slippers to their house and didn’t bring jackets for the kids….thinking we would all be okay even when we went to visit family graves.
Dinner was fabulous and it’s always fun to see family. Sue talked to us about her Dad and told us some fun stories, then Mark talked about his parents and told us some things he had learned from them. It was so great to hear these stories and allow our kids to get to know their ancestors a little better. Amy shared a talk she gave in Sacrament meeting about her experience of joining the church and being sealed to her family. She is so awesome! The Spirit was very strong and I was so grateful she shared her talk with all of us.
So, after I dried my tears again, we all packed into our cars and headed to the cemetery…in the pouring rain. First we saw Mark’s parents.
The rain was really coming down and it felt like our loved ones were aware of our presence and sad about our separation, just like we were.
It was soon obvious that slippers and no jackets just weren’t cutting it, so we made a quick stop at home on our way to the next cemetery. Much better.
We visited Sue’s Dad’s grave. I am really looking forward to meeting these amazing people who have such an amazing posterity. It’s going to be an awesome party when that happens!
We stayed late and visited and played games and just enjoyed each other’s company. It was so nice to be surrounded by people that we love so much!
A few stalwarts slept over at Grandma and Grandpa’s house, but we wimpy ones went home to sleep (easier for the little ones, and guaranteed a happier Monday then if we would have stayed)…but bright and early Monday morning we woke up to go back for breakfast.
It had snowed last night. Not a lot, but still. It’s almost June for heaven’s sake. Always optimistic, I packed up our swimming stuff and brought along…just in case.
Grandma was busy making breakfast casserole for everybody and Grandpa was busy cleaning the pool. Positive thoughts.
Colin was wishin’ and hopin’ that we’d be able to get in.
Checking out the temperature of the water….mmmmm, warm. Grandpa had turned up the heat just for the party.
Then, miracle of miracles, it wasn’t raining. After a yummy breakfast, the kids got their suits on and got in the pool with Dad. It was like a big old hot tub! Some of the Dad’s got in, too, but they started out in the warmer water before venturing out to play with the kids.
But soon the crowds rolled in and the party got rockin’!!
I was freezing, so I stayed out of the pool with the baby. Nice excuse, I know, but it was cold!
Our kids got out of the pool, but some hard-cores stayed in while it hailed. Time for some indoor games, treats, and maybe a little nap.
It was a great family weekend, despite being during the wettest May in all of Utah’s written history! Thanks Mark and Sue for a fun party, we love our family!
