Our beautiful last day in France, boo. We left our chateau early in the morning and headed north to Pierrefonds. I’ve never been here before, it’s northeast of Paris…an enormous castle nestled at the top of a small village and it was gorgeous! We made good time and got there before the castle actually opened, so we decided to eat, of course. There were a few restaurants, but we decided to have a picnic and got a rotisserie chicken and a couple of baguettes. Luckily we had some stinky brie in the car, which tasted awesome (seriously: the stinkier the better with that cheese!), plus a little mustard. It was one of the best meals of the trip as we sat on a bench, picking at the chicken and making our little baguette sandwiches. Yum! The girls still talk about our picnic in Pierrefonds.
The fall colors were breathtaking as we walked around this little ville. We even found a great second home for sale (in my dreams).
There was a pretty path that led behind the castle, and since we had still had some time, we took a little stroll.
There were old catapults and other fighting equipment stashed along the trail, it was very cool!
Mark found some little friends in the gift shop and had a sword fight with them, adorable!
This place was amazing, so many beautiful details and design. I’m in love! There was also a very unique attraction…an underground crypt that was open to the public. I’ve never been in one of these before and I’ll admit, it was a little creepy at first. The girls were not thrillled about going underground with a bunch of dead people, but it was worth it!
They were in different positions and there were dim lights glowing around each sarcophagus. Suddenly, we heard voices coming over the speakers which were supposed to be the voices of the dead, telling their stories. A little weird, but a lot cool! There were royalty, intellects, knights…and some pretty sassy poses!
After we toured the castle, we had a little ice cream and Coke Zero before hitting the road. I would definitely come visit here again, it was such a quaint and delicious little ville!
We hopped in the car and headed to Paris, but look what we found on our way! Mark got out to get a picture by this very cool, very old, very unique windmill…what a find!
We got to our hotel, which was right next to the airport. In fact, Joe and Mark dropped us off and headed over to turn the car in so we didn’t have to do it in the morning. There is a metro running from the car place to our our hotel to the airport…parfait!
While they were gone and we were getting settled, Sue knocked on my door. “I think I blew a fuse in my room”. Oops. I called the front desk and told them the lights weren’t working in the room and they sent someone up right away, popped a new fuse in and was all fixed before the boys came back. That’s one nice perk of staying in a modern hotel versus an old chateau (although, there was NOT as much character!)
The boys returned and we went to dinner at the hotel restaurant for our last supper in France. I am going to miss it here! Sometimes when you take a big trip, you feel like you’ve scratched the itch to travel and got it out of your system. But for me, having a taste of France threw fuel on the fire and now I just want to live here. Au revoir ma belle France, tu est toujours dans mon coeur et je t’aimerai a jamais!
We returned to our rooms and watched a little Dancing with the Stars, French edition before falling asleep…BUT, as soon as we did fall asleep, the fire alarm went off! Lights flashing, alarms buzzing, people exiting. We made our way outside for about 2 seconds before they cleared the building and let us in. When I asked what happened, they thought someone was smoking next to a smoke detector, which led to a complete evacuation. The excitement never ends!
Morning came quickly, we gathered our things, hopped on the metro straight to the airport and bid adieu to our wonderful vacation. Thank you Mark and Sue for a trip that we’ll never, ever forget! Thank you for your generosity and for the memories that we created.
And thank you Joe for the amazing pole dance you did to wake us all up.
A la prochaine France, we’ll be back!!
